If Clause Main Clause
First Conditional real situations connected with the present or future present simple will + base form
Second Conditional imaginary and unreal situations connected with the present or future past simple would + base form
Third Conditional imaginary and unreal situations connected with the past past perfect would + have + past participle
Mixed Conditional present consequences of a past action past perfect would + base form

 

Examples

  • First conditional
    • If I win the lottery, I will buy a big house.
  • Second conditional
    • What would you do if you won the lottery?
  • Third conditional
    • If he had left five minutes earlier he would have caught the train.
  • Mixed conditional
    • If we had left the house on time, the movie wouldn't be sold out.
      = We didn't leave the house on thiem and now the movie is sold out.
    • If I hadn't spent it all in Las Vegas last weekend, I would have some money.
      = I don't have any oney because I spent it all in Las Vegas last weekend.
    • If I had gone shopping yesterday, I would have some food in the fridge.
      = I didn't go shopping yesterday, so I don't have any food in the fridge.
