[TOEFL/Writing] Question 1 : Paradox of choice

The writer and the lecturer debated the paradox of choice. The writer mentioned having lots of options can lead to positive effects, and the lecturer asserted the opposite.

First of all, the writer said many options are capable of making life easy. Through this fact, people easily find merchandise and services that satisfy. However, the lecturer asserted this choice is not effective and make people exhausted. When people see a huge number of choices, they must use large amounts of mental resources, and then this can lead them to be lss capable of making a better decision.

Secondly, the writer mentioned many options are innovative and progressive. In other words. people try to search for alternatives if they are exposed to many options, and this promotes people to produce new things and services. On the other hand, the lecturer disputed the writer's opinion. For this reason, when people are promoted to produce new things and services, people could choose poor quality products and services instead of those of good quality.

Lastly, the writer said many choices make personal growth and development ghrive. Because of having many choices, people must think deeply, and they wiil feel challenged. Contrasting the writer's opinion, the lecturer argued that excessive choice makes people less likely to seek solutions. Furthermore, people get easily sick of choosing between many options, and then people cannot change their values and goals
