[TOEFL/Writing] Question 1 : Franchise or Nonfranchise
When we start a business, we can choose between a franchise and a nonfranchise. A franchise is a business that the owner receives a license from a well-know company. The writer talked about the advantages of a franchise and the lecturer took the opposite point of view.
First, the writer said that franchise owners can get reliable suppliers that franchise companies have already found. However, the lecturer argued that suppliers offered by franchise companies are overpriced and franchise owners are forced to buy from these suppliers.
Second, the writer said that franchise owners can save money on advertising because franchise companies are advertised. The writer claimed that franchise owners need to pay 6% of total sales to franchise companies for advertising. Yet, franchise companies advertise not franchise owners businesses but their brand.
Third, the writer said franchise owners could fail less than nonfranchise owners because the inexperienced owners can use proven business models. On the other hand, the lecturer said people do not nedd to buy franchises. They can buy nonfranchises from previous owners.
